After Christmas Special

How was your Christmas? Here at the OCCUPIED BERLIN headquarters it was a fantastic time.

However, I did manage to get some work done and did a little fine tuning to the manuscript just before the paperback version gets released. That means that there is another update to the Kindle version of DOUGHBOY CITY. Please make certain you have the latest version.

FYI: The paperback version of DOUGHBOY CITY is scheduled for release January 7, 2014. Did you know that today, 13 December 2013 is Saint Lucia's Day?

According to Wikipedia Saint Lucia's Day is "the church feast day dedicated to Lucia of Syracuse (d.304), also known as Saint Lucy, and is observed on 13 December. St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated most commonly in Italy and in Scandinavia, with each emphasizing a different aspect of the story. It is one of the very few saint days observed in Scandinavia. In traditional celebrations, Saint Lucy comes as a young woman with lights and sweets. In some forms, a procession is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles (or lights), while others in the procession hold only a single candle each."

The origins of Saint Lucia
"Saint Lucia is one of the few saints celebrated by the overwhelmingly Lutheran Nordic people — Danes; Swedes; Finns and Norwegians. The St. Lucy's Day celebrations retain many indigenous Germanic pagan, pre-Christian midwinter elements. Some of the practices associated with the day predate the adoption of Christianity in Scandinavia, and like much of Scandinavian folklore and even religiosity, is centered on the annual struggle between light and darkness.

Saint Nicholas Day (6.December)

Greetings,

We are already into the last month of 2013. Can you believe that? What are your plans for 2014? Personally, I am going to do something out of the ordinary everyday. Also, I am setting a goal of publishing two more OCCUPIED BERLIN books by the end of 2014.

You already know the subject: the Berlin Airlift. I really believe that the subject that I am going to cover is not what you think it is. I can tell you it involves Berlin, airplanes, and those pesky Russkies.

Seriously, I do hope you like it. In the meantime, we have to get past DOUGHBOY CITY. Right now I am still on track for the late January 2014 final update.

Just a quick reminder that we are one week away from the next update to DOUGHBOY CITY.

Doughboy City (mini update)

This weekend I was working on the latest update to Doughboy City. Here is a little something-something just for you:

"When the evening comes to Doughboy City, quickly, fire barrels are lit. The fire barrels are actually 55-gallon drums with the top removed and a fire on the inside. The heat that barrel gives off is fantastic and when your fellow soldiers gather around it, well, those are some of the best times. Many years from now, I will remember and know that nothing would compare to those simple times. When all the action for the day has ceased and it was just soldiers and no outside influence, just Infantrymen. They could be themselves; they could let their guard down, just shoot “the shit” or vent about the bad and celebrate the good as we gathered around a single 55-gallon drum with a roaring fire on the inside. There would never be another time like that. For now, I was dealing with the passing of a friend and I was starting to think it was not an accident."

Doughboy City (Update #4)

Hello Readers,

I hope you are doing well. Here is some news on what is happening here.

First off, I want to thank everyone that has purchased a copy. I also want you to know that I am very appreciative of the fact that you took the time to buy the ebook and read it and most of all being patient with me and my updates. The idea with the updates was to create a "serial" effect in presenting the book from start to finish. I am big fan of old time radio (radio plays from the 1930s and 1940s) and decided to try this format with my first ebook. I do hope it is not too inconvenient. Don't worry, it will be finished soon.

Speaking of finishing soon, the next addition to the ebook should be live some time in very late November.

If you are interested in the next book in the Occupied Berlin series it has been tentatively titled: "Berlin Airlift" and I will post a little something about that new book here some time very soon.

Here is a very small excerpt from the upcoming update:

“Good, hopefully he’ll stay in the CP until just before they decide to attack.”

“This should be interesting seeing them attack from up here”

“It will be nice to not be lugging this beast down that hill then up and down the streets at Doughboy.”

“Careful what you say, they could at the last minute tell us to follow them on the attack.”

All up and down the line of 90MM Recoilless Rifles and M60 Machineguns the men of Alpha Company are settling themselves in for a quick rest before chaos breaks the morning calm and the flashes and bangs changes the tone of the day. Before the line of men and weapons of war the ground will shake and the sky will be filled a new set of clouds. The smoke of burning tires, smoke canisters, and wood will hang close to the ground replacing the grey and white of the morning fog.

What seems like an hour is only a few minutes later when word comes down the line that everyone is to get another front layer of bags put in place. More digging, more bags.

“Alright, be right back” as Guerra moves out to get started on filling and moving sand bags.

As I started filling the two half empty bags I could hear some discussion just off to the right and on the other side of the fog. I recognized the voices.

About the 10/19 Update

Hello Reader, Fan, and Follower, I thank you for stopping by. I hope, for those of you that purchased OCCUPIED BERLIN: Doughboy City before October 19, 2013 you received your notice and upload the update to you Kindle device, app, or desktop program. If not, don't worry it is not too late to do so. If you have already updated the story and have read it, I would really like your feedback. I really want to know if you like it, hate it, don't care about it, or ????

Seriously, I want your feedback otherwise I will follow that old saying of "No News Is Good News" and that I can deal with.

Now about the update. Here are few the things that I did:

1. Modified the book cover
2. Added two new chapters. One chapter (#3) introduces Doughboy City to the reader and the second chapter (#4) lays down the foundation for the upcoming action and you are introduced to McNair Barracks the home of the protagonist and antagonist of the story.

As I mentioned there were be a big chapter update just before we really get into the holiday season. I anticipate about 5 or more chapters to be uploaded for another update. Then after the first of the year I will upload the remainder of the book.

About Comardes Anatoly and Yuri

I started writing "Doughboy City" back in November of 2011 as part of the National Novel Writing Month project or NANOWRIMO.  NANOWRIMO has become an annual event in which would-be authors write every day for one month straight at least 1000 words a day.  The result is, ideally, a novel of 30,000 words is written and ready for editing.
Well, I did not get to 30,000 words but I got close and in doing so I have the story along with a solid outline and the core cast of characters.  It was not until I came back and re-visited the story that I decided it was time to finish "Doughboy City".

Now I could have started with the original beginning but would have left too many holes in the storyline that needed to be filled.  Therefore, I took the chronological approach and decided to start in 1945.

I wanted to explain not just what was happening but how fast things were happening and how certain things happen to be at the right place at the right time.

Thus Anatoly and Yuri were born.  Now, I am more than sure there were at least one Anatoly and one Yuri in the Soviet Red Army in the last days of World War II.  However, I cannot verify if any were actually assigned to the specific mortar unit mentioned in the story.  The story called for these two to guide us down this path and they needed names.

Now, these two may or may not play any further role in the story.  However, I would not count them out in any of the stories left to be told.  The occupation of Berlin lasted quite a long time so rest assured that leaves the door wide open, heck; it leaves it wide open for all the characters. This applies to the living and dead.

Now, do not take this as something that is written in stone but I will leave all the options on the table.  Let us just call it the author's prerogative.

However, one thing is certain in all future stories look for all members of the Army of Occupation to be mentioned. They may even play a role or two (or more) in the upcoming storylines.

Book Description:
During the Allied Occupation of Berlin (1945-1994) the US soldiers needed a place to hone their skills and prepare for when the Soviets and the Warsaw Pact moved towards making Khrushchev's Ultimatum a reality. Doughboy City was where they went to train and practice their soldier skills.

Doughboy City was a mock city with its own subway station and city hall. As with any training situation there will be accidents and Doughboy City had its fair share of accidents over its brief history. However, one foggy morning the training turns deadly. The military called it a horrible accident but one Soldier knows it was not but cannot prove who did it. He accuses the most logical person but accusing and proving are two different things. That is until an unlikely duo changes everything for everyone.

All this takes place in the days before the world would change forever. Then again, in Berlin change is an everyday occurrence.

Welcome to the Official Blog of Occupied Berlin (Tales from Freedom's Outpost)

This blog will chronicle the activities behind this new project I have undertaken. I have started writing a series of FICTION stories set during the Occupation of Berlin from 1945 to 1990 by the World War II Victorious Allies (French, British, Soviet, and U.S.).

The stories themselves will be individual books to the series. The stories will also be set during key dates and event during the history of  post-War Berlin. Basically, I will use the Cold War as a background and on occasion the Cold War will be front and center in the storyline, I mean it is Berlin we are talking about.

Please enjoy, ask questions, and please I beg you to provide feedback. How else will I know how I am doing.
