Less Than 60 Days To Go (Secret Surprise Inside)

Hello again,
I just want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to everyone that has read my books. It is such an honor to have you read my stories.

I also want to share with you that we now have less than 60 days before the publication of SPANDAU GUARD.

I am really excited about sharing this story with you. I do hope you find it interesting.

This is how excited I am to share it with you. Please enjoy this brief snippet (warning: this does contain adult language but then again we are talking about Infantrymen and we have plenty of adult language to go around):

----CHAPTER 5 - Thursday December 6 (St. Nicholas Day) - Tower 3 - Spandau Prison-----

It was about 3:30pm when Corey called to tell me the visitors left and took Number 7 with them.

“What? They did what without checking with me first?” I said in jest.

“Yep, guess they were in a hurry to get home before it got dark.”

I looked to the west and the sun was dangerously close to setting.

“Nah, he’s still here,” Corey said.

“Yeah, it would made no sense for us to guard an empty prison. Then again, this is the Army and this is Berlin,” I told him.

“Hey, Sgt. Wilson wants to know if you need a break.”

     “Not yet.”

“OK. Sgt. Wilson says I need to call the other towers.”

     “OK. Out here.”

     “Hey!”

     “What?”

     “It’ll be dark soon.” click.

It’ll be dark soon. What was that supposed to mean? Of course, the sun was setting. Another thirty minutes later, the sun finally hit the horizon. For as long as I have been here, I cannot seem to get over the sun setting at four o’clock in the afternoon. I do not know how these people can live like this with sunrise at eight and sunset a workday later, at four. I guess you eventually get used to it. I hope that I will get used to it sooner rather than later. In the meantime, I will deal with it.

     “Al,” a whisper.

     “Huh?”

Did someone just call my name? It sounded like the whisper was right next to me here in the tower. It could not be. There was no one up here with me.

     “Al,” another whisper.

This time it sounded like came from outside the wall. Corey. His was the only name that came to my mind. What would he be doing outside the wall?

“Corey are you out there?” I called out.

Nothing. Not even a snap of a twig or rustling of the leaves that were on the ground. Those are a sure sign of someone is out on the ground and being careless in their movements. I know who is careless in their movements. Privates. Newbie Privates are very careless. Still nothing.

“Private Corey, you better not be out there fucking around,” I called out again.

The light breeze that's been blowing all day suddenly picked up and I could hear the branches rubbing against each other. Maybe that is what I heard. Yeah, it had to be the branches and the wind. I could easily confirm whether it was Corey. All I had to do was pick up the phone and ask if he was there, in the guardroom.

As I walked around the tower looking towards inside the compound, something caught my eye. For a brief second, I thought I saw some fog rolling across the walkway. However, when I looked again it was gone. It must have been the angle and the lights on the building and my eyes still adjusting to the night. It suddenly got colder. I could feel the very cold air surrounding me. The kind of cold air that hurts your lungs when you inhale deeply while you are outside doing Physical Training on those icy winter Berlin mornings. It had been cool all day, somewhere around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and I know when the sun goes down it gets colder but not like this. The air felt like it was well below freezing.

     “Al,” another whisper.

“OK, ha ha! Funny. Who’s out there?”

     RING! RING! The tower phone.

---------
That's it for now. I will post more excerpts and snippets in the coming days.

Thank you,
David

ABOUT AIR BRIDGE BERLIN
Set in 1948 West Berlin during the Soviet Blockade of Berlin and the Berlin Airlift, US Army Infantry Corporal Tony Henriquez and his men are tasked with guarding Tempelhof airbase that was the focal point of food, medicine, and fuel arriving in the beleaguered city. While on guard duty, he meets a young Berliner that was there to catch the famous parachute candy bars from the Candy Bomber himself. During the early months of the Airlift, the two form a fast friendship. As the much needed food and medicine was coming in to the city without fail very few aircraft ever took anything back to the west.

All was going well until one day the Soldier stumbles onto a secret operation run by a covert U.S. group. The young Berliner stumbles into the operation when he sees something that questions everything that he knows about a neighbor. Soon the two find out the Soviets have a covert operation of their own and have been running that operation effectively. Tony Henriquez and the Berliner are on a race against time to save Berlin and western Germany from the Soviets and their plans.

UNTITLED BOOK PROJECT FOR A FALL 2014 RELEASE GETS A TITLE

If you have been paying attention to the posts on this blog you have seen that the last line of each post mentions the title (or working title) of the next book in the Occupied Berlin series.

The time has come to reveal the title of the next book in the Occupied Berlin series:

SPANDAU GUARD

The story is set in West Berlin at the infamous (or notorious) SPANDAU PRISON. A US Army Infantry soldier and his colleagues serve guard duty during the month of December and spends the entire Christmas season guarding a war criminal. Military Forces, International Politics, and the aftermath of World War II in Berlin all play second fiddle to a rumor that has not changed since the first day Spandau Prison was re-opened for business by the British, French, Russians, and the Americans.

In western Berlin, Spandau Prison housed the seven Nazi's that were convicted at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II. From the first day, the seven convicts arrived at Spandau until the 17th day of August 1987, each month the four World War II allies would take turns guarding the prison and its prisoners for month long rotation. The rotation went British, French, Soviet, and then the US. Each month, like clockwork this changeover of control of the prison went on without fail. No matter what the global political climate was, the changeover took place.

When it came to governing the future of the former German capital, this was one of the few things that all four World War II allies could agree upon. Keeping the seven most dangerous men in the world locked up. However, the true danger was not the former Nazi's but the place that was to be their home until their sentence was up. The true danger was the prison itself.

Since its inception, Spandau Prison had seen many things happen to bad people but when bad things started happening to good people, something changed. Spandau Prison became the first chamber of horrors that would become the definition of what a madman envisioned for the world, if he had it his way.

Set in the month of December (the U.S. Guard rotation month) and starting on the day of the changeover from the Soviets, a young G.I. is warned of some strange happenings when a Soviet private utters a single word as he is being relieved of his guard post.

While the spirit of Christmas may be in the air throughout the city of Berlin, at Spandau a different spirit is in the air. The young Infantry soldier soon finds that Spandau Guard means more than babysitting a group of old men, it means revealing a past that was supposed to be scrubbed clean and forgotten.

SPANDAU GUARD is set for an October 14, 2014 release. However, be on the lookout for excerpts to be released in the coming months. Additionally, an introduction will be published soon and available on Kindle and Nook for $0.00.

Catching Up (27 JUNE 2014)

Greetings,
It has been a little over a week since the last log post and I thought it was time for another one.  Here it is!
There is really no subject other than just wanting to catch up with you.  The aside from reading not much has been going on here.  My family and I have been tending to our vegetable garden and have really enjoyed the fruits of our labor.

Here is shot of two beauties that will be ripe just in time for Independence Day and the mandatory Barbecue dinner (after all what's the 4th of July without Barbecue?)!

Now do not get me wrong, I have in writing.  I have not started working on the next book, will I have.  The outline is done, characters are in place, and the back-story, for the most part, is under control.  I have decided to take a little break in writing since the publication of "Air Bridge Berlin" but I will resume after the 4th of July (next week).

WOW, the month of June is all but done.  The year will be half of over.  Can you believe it?

I want to take this time to THANK everyone that has helped me with the writing of the book and those that have read my stories.  I really do appreciate it!

Two stories in six months, I do not know if it is a good thing or a bad thing.  I hope it is a good thing in that the stories I have been telling you like.  I know it is a bad thing because as I go back and reread the stories I see where I need to amplify more and where I do not need to amplify at all.  That along with a reader feedback will definitely make be a better writer, a better offer, and above all, a better storyteller.

Please let me know what to think. I really do I hear from you.  As always, you can write me at dave (at) daveguerra.com.

I will keep his brief and close for now.

I do appreciate it and until next week,
Thank you,
David.
